Introduction to Viterbo, Italy
In the Lazio region of central Italy rises Viterbo, an ancient city that is 80kms north of Rome. It is majestically surrounded by Monti Volsini and Monti Cimini. Viterbo hotels in the city centre are conveniently nearby intact medieval walls that date to the 11th century plus many other attractions. The walls' gates are still in use. This is one of the best-preserved historic medieval towns in the country. Many old churches here are built atop still older ruins. The town's chief attraction is Palazzo dei Papi (Papal Palace), where popes would go to when there was trouble in Rome. Also a top highlight is the Romanesque-style Cathedral of St Lorenzo, which sports a fine Gothic belfry from the 1300s and was built atop a temple of Hercules.
