Introduction to Vibo Valentia, Italy
Situated in the 'toe' of the 'boot' of Italy, Vibo Valentia town is set right along a pretty stretch of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the south of the country. While a tourist centre, Vibo Valentia still holds true to its agricultural and commercial roots, so it never feels overdone. The hottest sightseeing attractions are the Norman-Hoehenstaufen Castle, most likely built atop the ruins of a Greek acropolis around the year 1000 AD. It is a now a museum. The Walls of Hipponion, the former Greek settlement, can be explored as well. The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore e San Leoluca dates to the 800s AD and was built over a Byzantine basilica. It has an exquisite 18th century marble altar and a 16th century Madonna sculpture. Two other top religious site are the Church of Santa Ruba (circa 1000 AD), which boasts an Oriental-style cupola, and the Church of the Rosario (circa 1337), located over a Roman temple.
