Introduction to Viareggio, Italy
No Tuscany beach town is larger or located at a more southern location on the Mediterranean Sea than Viareggio, among the first resorts of its kind in all of Europe. Many people believe this resort reached its peak during the 1920s, but Viareggio hotels continue to welcome millions of guests to this day, especially during the annual and elaborate Viareggio Carnevale, where parades are held along the promenade each Sunday. However, visitors who cannot come during Carnevale can still learn about the event and see plenty of memorabilia at Museo Cittadella del Carnevale, open on weekend afternoons. Although most beaches here are privately owned, some allow guests to use their facilities for a fee, and the calm Mediterranean Sea waters supply ideal swimming conditions.
