Introduction to Verona - Borgo Venezia e San Michele
Borgo Venezia and San Michele Extra are two adjacent districts of the city of Verona, in northern Italy. The two are on the opposite bank of the River Adige from the city centre. The most significant landmark in the districts is the medieval Our Lady of Country Church, which is a quirky circular shape. Also in this district are the remains of a 2,100-year-old Roman amphitheatre. A tiered seating area, arches and part of the stage give an idea of the theatre's size when it was built. Nearby is the convent of St Gerolamo, a Renaissance edifice that now houses the city's archaeological museum. Borgo Venezia e San Michele hotels are spread around the area and are a convenient base for exploring Verona city centre. The fabulous Ponte Scaligero bridge spans the Adige and is the gateway to attractions including San Zeno Maggiore Basilica. People arriving in the city at Porta Nuova Railway Station can easily walk to Borgo Venezia via the bridge. The city university is on the edge of the district and there are lots of cafes and restaurants in its environs.
