Introduction to Vercelli, Italy
Vercelli is located in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, between Turin and Milan, and near the River Po. Historians claim the city was founded around 600 BC, making it one of the oldest cities in this part of Italy. It is easy to get around the city on foot as most places of interest are in and around the centre, and there are also quite a few pedestrian-only streets. Cycling is also a popular way of exploring the city. Many Vercelli hotels are located in the city centre, in close proximity to the main attractions. Among the most visited places is the cathedral, the site of which has held a church since the 4th century, with the current building having been remodeled several times. It houses a library with a number of important ancient manuscripts such as the 8th century Laws of the Lombards. The narrow pedestrian streets in the city centre are full of small shops which sell unique locally made clothes, trinkets and other items. There are several colourful markets where the locals shop, which are generally crowded but well worth a visit. Vercelli has no shortage of restaurants where unsurprisingly, the pizzas are recommended, and there is also a wide range of international cuisine on offer.
