Introduction to Venice - Outskirts
One of the most iconic, unique and well-known cities anywhere on earth, Venice continue to draw millions of visitors year after year with its charm, romantic canals and rich history. However, with limited space, focus continues to move to the city's outskirts and areas just across the lagoon, where a number of affordable Venice hotels and convenient transport to the city await. To the west is Marghera, where travellers can grab quick rides via the Ponte della Liberta bridge to Venice and its wealth of sites, including the unmistakably Byzantine exterior and majestic interior of Saint Mark's Basilica, as well as the pan-city Grand Canal and Piazza San Marco's Procuratie Vecchie, one of the most recognisable buildings in the region. Overlooking the lagoon and not far from Marghera on the SS14 motorway is Marco Polo Airport, a global hub where flights depart to points across Europe as well as to North America, Asia and the Middle East.Visit our Venice Travel Guide
