The glorious waterborne canal city of Venice is famous for its fabulous concentration of art, be it the paintings and sculptures of the galleries, museums, palaces and churches or the sheer artistry of the city's dogged pursuit of life amid rising sea levels. For almost three centuries, starting in 1515, the city's Jews were restricted to living in this area, providing the genesis of the term 'ghetto'. Venetian Jewish life is still centred here, with several old synagogues to be seen, and visitors seeking kosher meals will not have to look far.
