Introduction to Trapani - Erice Mare
The many modern tower blocks that blight sections of modern Trapani today might make it hard to imagine the city has an incredible history that stretches all the way back to the days of Phoenican power, when the city played a key role in Carthaginian defences. The major city on Sicily's west coast, Trapani lost large sections of its historic buildings to bombing raids in WWII. Hotels in Erice Mare, which looks out to the sea and up Mount Erice, provide excellent access to many of the better attractions. The charming village of Erice, which lies higher up the mountain, is likely the best place to start your wanderings though the mazes of narrow streets within Trapani, which can be great fun to explore. For some fun in the open air along the sea, head for the port at the southern end of the city. A good supply of trains to Palermo is available at the railway station. Trapani's airport is about 30 minutes away by road but has impressive air links to various European cities.
