Introduction to Trani, Italy
The Adriatic seaport of Trani lies in the far south of Italy, in the newly-formed province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. Historically, the port was an important hub for sea transportation during the Crusades, and was occupied by the Byzantines and the Lombards. Consuls from the great Italian maritime republics of Venice, Amalfi, Pisa and Ragusa were established in this political and trading hub. Trani is famous throughout Judaism as a major medieval centre for Jewish thought and as the birthplace of a famed 13th century rabbi, Isaiah ben Mali. The ancient medieval Scolanova Synagogue is still in use in the city. Trani hotels cater for both business travellers and holidaymakers exploring its: 13th century restored fort, now a museum; medieval Jewish ghetto and magnificent 12th century cathedral, one of the finest in the south of Italy. The Church of Ognisanti, once a Knights Templar chapel, the Gothic Palace of the Doges of Venice and several churches with Byzantine domes and Romanesque facades are popular attractions within the city. other spellings: trainhotels, trane otel, tlane hotell, tlaiegn hote, traeign hotes, tlaeign hotle, traiegn
