The little Lombardy village of Toscolano-Maderno lies on the western shores of Lake Garda, surrounded by forested hills, with Toscolano set as an industrial centre and Maderno as the lakeside tourist resort. Both settlements date from the Etruscan era, with Maderno set on a pretty curving bay with views to the snow-capped mountains in the far distance. Toscolano has an impressive set of Roman ruins including mosaic floors from the ancient Villa Verniers and two temples dedicated to Bacchus and Jupiter. Most Toscolano-Maderno hotels are located in the beachside area, close to heritage buildings and the harbour with its eateries, bars and cafes. The parish church of St Peter and St Paul contains a priceless collection of artworks by Andrea Celestial, a famed Venetian painter. An ancient bell tower is all that remains of the 13th century fortifications, and the surrounding slopes of the hills are given over to olive and lemon tree groves.
