The pretty coastal town of Tortoreto lies on Italy's Adriatic Sea and is divided into its Old Town, set on a hill and Tortoreto Lido, the new resort area. Most Tortoreto hotels are located in the new part of town, close to the beaches as well as the many heritage buildings of the historic old quarter. Tourism is the focus of the town's economy, with the local government stressing environmental concerns as well as increased tourist numbers. In 2008, the European Blue Flag award was given to the town's beaches. One of the best known attractions here is the superb botanical garden in the grounds of the Di Gennaro historic mansion. Tortoreto is famed for its two indigenous culinary specialities of rosticini, a type of kebab featuring meat from castrated rams, and the pasta chittara, thinly rolled, hand cut and used with meatballs and tomato sauce for chittara con le pallotini. Both dishes are served everywhere in town and make for a tasty supper after a day sailing, fishing or just lazing on the beach.
