Introduction to Taormina - Capo Taormina
Messina province, on west coast Sicily, is home to the delightful town of Taormina. Equidistant between the larger towns of Catania and Messina, this tiny resort has been drawing visitors since the 19th century with its Ionian beaches and ancient ruins. The town sits 250 metres high on a mountainous cape which stretches along the coast. The highest point is home to a Saracen castle, yet this structure is not the architectural highlight of this Sicilian beach hang-out. Stealing the limelight is the well-preserved Corinthian theatre, the island's second largest, thought to be from the Roman period but likely re-built around an even older Greek theatre. Watching a performance here is a memorable experience. Taormina's historical points of interest don't stop there. The 13th century cathedral (Duomo) is a must-see, as is the 17th century Baroque fountain. Modern draws include lively restaurants and bars, as well as comfortable Capo Taormina hotels. Most people access the town by road from one of its larger neighbours. other spellings: capo taorminahotels, capo taormina otel, cappo toarmina hotell, capo taormena hotes
