Introduction to South Sardinia - Domus de Maria
Talk of South Sardinia typically centres on Cagliari but about 35kms to the east lies the area known as Domus de Maria. Located at the southernmost extremity of both the island and a huge forested area that surrounds Mount Arcosu, the district is home to a number of picturesque little villages. Hotels in Domus de Maria provide visitors with the opportunity to enjoy a gentle, rustic way of life far from the busy crowds of city centres. One of the prices to be paid for enjoying this relatively remote tourist haven is that transport links are not great. The SS195 highway, which runs through the heart of the district, is the only road connecting it to the rest of the island. Though restaurants, shops and markets can be found in the villages that dot the hills and coastline, for most amenities, as well as ferries and the local airport, you'll have to make the hour-plus-long trek to Cagliari, about 50kms to the east.
