Introduction to South Sardinia - Carloforte
Tourism has recently overtaken fishing in the charming town of Carloforte, located on an island off Sardinia's southwest coast. This Saint Peter's Island town has been inhabited since the 18th century, when coral anglers who originated in Genoa and Pegli first moved here. The cultural influences from both these places can still be witnessed here today in the form of the local dialect. The Chiesa dei Novelli Innocenti church, parts of which date to the 14th century, is thought to have been constructed in honour of child crusaders who died in a ship wreck offshore. Getting to Carloforte from the Sardinian mainland is straightforward, as ferries run to the town every hour from Portovesme. The community is also connected to neighbouring island Sant'Antioco by ferry. Aside from discovering the cultural heritage here, visitors to Carloforte can spend time at the sand and rock beaches, where water sports such as windsurfing can be practiced. Additionally, Carloforte hotels are able to organise diving and boat tours for guests. other spellings: carlofortehotels, carloforty otel, carlofort hotell, caloforte hote, caroforte hotes
