Introduction to Siena - Barberino Val d’Elsa
Italy's Tuscany region is a heart-stopper in terms of romantic scenery and timeless villages, and the ancient hamlet of Barberino Val d'Elsa is no exception to this rule. Still enclosed by its original fortified walls, this charming town in the Siena province is the perfect place to drop out and step back in time. Originally the home of the noble Barberino family in the 11th century, much of the town centre still contains the old stone buildings, gateways and cobblestone lanes that were part of the first incarnation of the family estate. Hanging out in the Piazza Barberi is the best spot to soak in the medieval ambiance, surrounded by historic landmarks like the Church of San Bartolomeo and the Chapel of San Michele Arcangelo. Check out the Antiquarium Museum, to see Etruscan artefacts unearthed from the area, before wandering through the 14th-century Sienese Gate on the way to choosing a little cafe for lunch. Staying in one of the Barberino Val d'Elsa hotels provides both ambiance and proximity to all the attractions this little gem of a town holds. Visit our Siena Travel Guide
