Introduction to Sassari - Castelsardo
The Sardinian town of Castelsardo lies in the northwestern province of Sassari. Boasting a lengthy history stretching back to pre-Nuragic times, the town holds traces of its Roman, Genoese and Aragonese pasts. This pretty community offers a number of sights, from the iconic Elephant's Rock to the remains of the 12th century Doria Castle, named after the Genoese family which once ruled this fiefdom; the castle overlooks the town from its hilltop location. The best place to uncover Castelsardo's history is at the Maestro di Castelsardo museum, housed in Co-Cathedral, parts of which date to the 16th century. Overlooking the sea and featuring a bell tower, the church is home to two prized 15th century religious paintings. Castelsardo hotels are best suited to visitors who want to enjoy the best of Sardinia's coastline as well as the historical places of interest. The nearest big city, Sassari, sits 30kms to the southwest. Here, fine artistic heritage in the form of neoclassical squares and other architecture can be enjoyed. other spellings: castelsardohotels, castalsardo otel, castelsardo hotell, castelsado hote, caselsardo
