The small town of San Michele al Tagliamento lies around 100kms from the World Heritage city of Venice on the Tagliamento River. Don't look for historic buildings here as the settlement is only 60 years old, having been built to serve tourism via its seaside resort of Bibione. Most visitors stay in beachside San Michele al Tagliamento hotels overlooking the water and the thousands of umbrellas and deckchairs arranged on the sands. Via Orsa Maggiore is the resort's main thoroughfare, lined with restaurants, fast food joints, bars and cafes as well as shops selling the usual tourist goods. The resort is lively in the evenings, mostly catering for domestic tourism plus a few foreign visitors. The nearest airport is Venice's Marco Polo International, with car hire recommended for the journey to Bibione as local transport is unreliable. Access to the resort is fastest via the A4/E55 and the S7 fast toll roads.
