Introduction to Salo, Italy
The Italian town of Salo lies on the shores of lovely Lake Garda in Lombardy Province's Breschia district. Home to just over 10,000 people and first settled during the Roman era, it is infamous for its WWII position as the capital of Mussolini's fascist pro-Nazi puppet state, the so-called Italian Social Republic. Historically, the town was well-used to being taken over, as it belonged during the Middle Ages to first the Milanese and later the Venetians. Its heritage from those troubled times includes the magnificent 15th century Duomo (cathedral) with its Renaissance artworks and the Palazzo della Magnifica Patria, now a significant museum documenting the Renaissance period, the Spanish Civil War and the Italian resistance movement. Salo hotels are located close to the attractions in town and the surrounding countryside. Sailing, fishing and water sports are available on Lake Garda, and a drive around the lake shores brings visitors to quaint villages and historic small towns. other spellings: salohotels, otelin saro, salo hotell, saol hotell, slao hote, aslo hotles
