Introduction to Rome - Vatican City
The heart of world Catholicism, Vatican City is a walled city-state enclave in the centre of the Eternal City of Rome. Guarded by the traditionally-costumed Swiss Guards, the state was ratified in 1929 and is ruled by the Pope and his College of Cardinals. Set backing St Peter’s Square, the city’s architectural treasure is the Basilica of St Peter, one of the world’s largest and most spectacular religious buildings. Vatican citizenry consists of two groups only: the clergy and the Swiss Guard - a total of 826 people. Vatican City, its library, museums and St Peter’s, are treasure houses of many thousands of priceless works of art and literature by generations of famous painters, sculptors and writers from across Europe and the rest of the world. Michelangelo’s Pieta and his breathtaking Sistine Chapel ceiling are two of the most famous. Although visitors are allowed into the main museum and the Sistine Chapel, no entry to the rest of Vatican City is allowed except to those on official business. There are no Vatican City hotels within the complex, but many are set close by. Visit our Rome Travel Guide
