Introduction to Rome - Trevi & Quirinal
One of the loveliest and best-known of all Rome's myriad fountains is the Fontana di Trevi, set in the Quirinal district in the small Piazza di Trevi. The fountain itself lies at the end of a Roman aqueduct, bringing the water of the Salone Springs, 20kms away, to the fountains in the city centre. Built in 1732 on the orders of Pope Clement XII, this spectacularly theatrical Baroque creation, designed by Nicola Salvi, is based on an earlier design by Benini. The central figure of Neptune, his chariot, its two seahorses and tritons guide all that underlines the ever-changing moods of the ocean, symbolised by the water in the fountain's basin. Immortalised by the song, Three Coins in the Fountain, the legend of the waters promises a return to Rome if a coin is thrown into the basin, with the thrower facing away from the sculpture and flinging the coin over his shoulder. Many hundreds of glittering coins - euros nowadays - can be seen through the moving waters. Close by the Trevi Fountain is a wide selection of Trevi Quirinal hotels, all a short step from its magnificence.Visit our Rome Travel Guide
