Introduction to Rome - San Giovanni
Best known for its imposing ancient church, the Roman district of San Giovanni is right on the edge of downtown Rome. Its central location makes it a good choice for a home base, and there are lots of San Giovanni hotels to choose from. As in much of Rome, there are historic landmarks and buildings at every turn here. The Palazzo del Laterano and its Basilica of St John Lateran is the most prominent attraction in San Giovanni. It’s the oldest and highest ranking of the four Papal Basilicas of Rome, with incredibly awe-inspiring girth and some wondrous interior artwork and design. A handful of museums can also be found here including the Historical Museum of the Liberation of Rome, tracing the Nazi occupation of Rome and the interrogations that took place inside the building in which the museum is housed. A nice stretch of green space is also on hand in Egerio Park on the southern edge of the district.
