Introduction to Rome - Piazza di Spagna
Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square) is probably the best known square in the Italian capital, Rome. Located in the north of the city centre, it is home to the Old Boat Fountain, a monument to the fact that the city often flooded in ancient times. These floods even led to one occasion when a boat ended up in the square, an event now marked by a fountain. The Virgin Mary overlooks the square, sitting upon a tower which was constructed in the 19th century in order to celebrate the Immaculate Conception. From the square, the 135 Spanish Steps lead up to the Trinita dei Monti church, passing the former home of John Keats, the famous poet. This home is now open to the public as the Keats-Shelley Memorial House. There are a number of restaurants in the vicinity of the square which cater to tourists and as such, they have prices to match. Guests can reach Piazza di Spagna hotels by taking metro line A to Spagna Station.Visit our Rome Travel Guide
