Introduction to Rome - Colosseum
The Colosseum in Rome is one of the most renowned sights in the world. This wonderful edifice was built by the Romans in the 1st century and was the largest structure ever constructed at this time. Despite the fact that it is partially ruined, the Colosseum is a must-visit site for visitors to the capital of Italy. Choosing Colosseum hotels is a convenient option as the building is located close to other major draws including the Roman Forum ruins, the Arch of Constantine and the museum collections of the Antiquarium Forense. The latter is housed in the former Santa Maria Nova convent and contains relics unearthed at the forum and the Temple of Vesta. Other fabulous structures within easy walking range are the Hercules Victor Temple, a Greek edifice which predates the Romans and is ringed by pillars. There are several cafes and restaurants in the area selling the ubiquitous pizza, gelato ice cream and gourmet coffees. Vendors and souvenir shops in the area offer statue and building reproductions as well as other mementos to take home. Visit our Rome Travel Guide
