Introduction to Rome - Ariccia
The magnificent city of Rome is one of the world's greatest travel destinations, with its glorious history, architecture and supreme heritage. A mega-city nowadays, it's surrounded by smaller towns with impressive historical centres, of which Araccia, with its myths and legends, is one of the most picturesque. Famous in Roman times for its rituals to the goddess Diana, it's reputed to have been a temporary burial place for the Greek hero Orestes and has always been famous for its delicious local wines. Since ancient times, the town's breezy location has drawn artists and writers from the steamy heat of Rome, with Araccia hotels as full with visitors nowadays as Roman inns were 2,000 years ago. The Renaissance sculptor Bernini is credited with a number of the facades of Araccia's heritage buildings, the most famous being the Sanctuary of the Madonna. Nearby are remnants of the Via Appia and the villa of Emperor Vitellus, as well as ancient temples to the goddess. Visit our Rome Travel Guide
