Rieti is a town and province in the central Italian region of Lazio. This ancient capital of Sabina is set within beautiful mountainous scenery and provides evidence of both medieval and Roman activity. Overlooked by the Terminillo and surrounded by the Reatini Mountains, Rieti is an ideal base to explore this territory which is steeped in history. Reatini Lakes Nature Reserve is an outstanding place of natural importance with the lakes Ripasottile and Lungo, where birds such as little grebe and heron are regularly spotted. The ancient city centre is enclosed by splendidly restored medieval stone walls, while the 13th century Papal Palace was once home to popes. Teatro Flavio Vespasiano (the Opera House) was constructed by the same architect that built the famous Opera in Rome and is considered, acoustically, as one of Italy's finest. The concert season includes opera, ballet and prose, while during the summer there are numerous musical events.
