The city of Catanzaro is called the 'City of Two Seas' because it overlooks both the Ionian Sea and the Gulf of Squillace in mainland Italy's southernmost province, Reggio Calabria. Many Catanzaro hotels in this capital of Italy's Calabria region are located near the Lido, a local beach situated just minutes by taxi from the city centre. Locals and tourists alike enjoy the Lido's clear water, sandy shores and friendly atmosphere. One of Europe's tallest bridges spans the city in a single arch and the 15th century Palazzo di Nobili now houses the current City Hall. Most other city landmarks are located near Piazza Grimaldi, the city's main square, which is named after Monaco's famous royal family. A renowned Antonello Gagini statue stands inside the Santa Teresa Church, while the Baroque Basilica dell'Immacolata is among the city's most imposing buildings. No church here, however, dates further back than the 1121 Duomo cathedral, which was painstakingly restored to its original medieval splendour after devastating WWII bombings.
