Ravenna is in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy. It is inland from the Adriatic Sea and was a very important commercial and strategic centre during the Roman Empire and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the numerous ancient mosaics which are now famous worldwide. The city is steeped in history with Dante who is regarded as the father of the Italian language choosing to be buried in the city and the number of monuments, mausoleums and basilicas is simply incredible.
