Introduction to Portovenere, Italy
The commune of Portovenere, located upon Italy's Ligurian coast, is part of La Spezia Province. It is surrounded by several little islands and villages, including Fezzano, Tino and Palmaria to name a few, and receives a significant number of tourists each year. The town and the surrounding area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, and has since seen an increase in the amount of tourists that enter the city each year. Portovenere hotels are found close to many of the main sites in town. There are wonderful landmarks for all to see in the town. The Gothic church of St Peter is one of the most visited attractions in Portovenere. It was constructed in the late 12th century and has withstood the pressures of time, still standing strikingly today. St Lawrence Church is another wonderful place that it worth visiting. It was built in the 11th century, but was fully restored in the 1500s after fire and enemy attacks left it dilapidated. Finally, there is a beautiful Genoese castle known as Andria Doria in the town.
