The remote Italian island of Ponza lies in the Pontine archipelago, in the Tyrrhenian Sea, some 33kms to the south of Cape Circeo. Legendarily featured in Homer's Odyssey as the home of the goddess Circe and named after Pontius Pilate, the island was well known in the Roman era after first being settled by the Etruscans.
