Introduction to Ponza, Italy
The remote Italian island of Ponza lies in the Pontine archipelago, in the Tyrrhenian Sea, some 33kms to the south of Cape Circeo. Legendarily featured in Homer's Odyssey as the home of the goddess Circe and named after Pontius Pilate, the island was well known in the Roman era after first being settled by the Etruscans. Nowadays, it offers a charming harbour lined with fishing boats, the hub for ferries carrying tourists from the mainland. The island's topography is romantically rugged and rocky, with its narrow main beach backed by towering grey cliffs, a reminder of its volcanic history. Attractive Ponza hotels are set along the harbour and in the hilly streets of the town, close to little restaurants and bars with stunning sea views. The island is famed for its Etruscan, Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Phoenician archaeological sites and ruins as well as for its weird volcanic rock formations, breathtaking Blue Grottos and Roman tunnel linking Ponza Town to Chiai di Luna Beach. other spellings: ponzahotels, otel pomza, ponaz hotell, pozna hotes, pnoza hotle, opnza hotes
