Perugia sits near the Tiber River, and is the capital of Umbria, a region in central Italy. The city has been well known as a center for the arts for centuries hosting such prominent names as Raphael, a well known artist during the Renaissance who painted five of his paintings inside the city, Pietro Vannucci, and famed Italian architect Galeazzo Alessi. The city became a part of Italy in 1860 when Umbria joined the Kingdom of Italy as a region. Hotels in Perugia can be found for all different budgets including inexpensive guest houses to luxury villas which can be rented daily, weekly, or monthly. Most of the hotels in Perugia are not far from the most prominent points of interest for the city including its various art museums which highlight several of the locally born famous artists. The city also hosts several music festivals throughout the year, including the well known Umbria Jazz Festival. Perugia hotels are often full during peak summer holidays and can be difficult to book without a prior reservation especially during the music festival in July.
