Introduction to Perugia - Outskirts
Perugia is the regional capital of Umbria, Italy, and is known to be one of the best Italian cities for art. It is situated in the central area of Italy, close to some lovely natural attractions including Trasimeno Lake. There are many hotels in Perugia for visitors to choose from, and the largest concentration is in the centre, near the main sights including art galleries and old churches. Not to be missed is Undergound Perugia, a medieval area of the city that is today covered by brick ceilings. Other historical attractions include Porta Marzia, a 3rd century Etruscan city gate, and Fontana Maggiore, a delightful medieval fountain built to celebrate the city’s independence. Dominating the centre is the 15th century, unfinished Cathedral of San Lorenzo. Adjacent to the cathedral is the Sala dei Notari (Town Hall), built in the 14th century in the Italian Gothic style. Guided walks are perhaps the best way to take in the city and its historical buildings.
