Introduction to Perugia - Cascia
Few regions of Perugia are as mountainous or remote as the community of Cascia, first settled as an ancient Roman village called Carsulae. Most guests at Cascia hotels are religious tourists whose main interest is the birthplace of St Rita. The village's basilica and monastery are also named after its patron saint, and a large shrine in her name welcomes numerous pilgrims each year. Although earthquakes and invasions have destroyed most of the village's ancient landmarks, several of its churches have maintained their splendour. A beautiful rose window and many beautiful paintings are displayed at the Gothic St Francis church, while a splendid 15th century wooden cross hangs inside the heavily modified Collegiate Church of St Mary. Frescos of Perugian and Umbrian schools lie within the Church of St Augustine. Carli Palace may be the community's best preserved civil building. The San Silvestro villa was constructed on top of ruins from a 2nd century BC pagan temple. Cascia is just 20kms from Norcia, where further historic architecture can be discovered. other spellings: casciahotels, cascial otel, cascai hotell, casscia hote, casgia hotle, cascia
