Introduction to Pavia, Italy
Pavia in northern Italy is a town steeped in rich history. Its origins go back to pre-Roman times. The town boasts a large number of medieval and Romanesque buildings and is a great place to walk around. The most famous building is Certosa di Pavia, which is a monastery with a church that was constructed between 1396 and 1495. It is situated eight kilometres north of the town. The monastery was built in Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. Those who venture inside will find a fresco and paintings by Bergognone, which were painted in the 15th century. Castello Visconti is an impressive castle in the northern part of the city. It was constructed in 1360 and today features the City Museum. The old part of the town has a great selection of Pavia hotels, ranging from five-star to budget hotels. There are also some excellent restaurants serving speciality dishes called zuppa pavese soup and risotto alla certosina, the latter which was invented by the monks at the monastery.
