Palermo is the capital of Italy’s southern island, Sicily. Situated near the north-western tip of the island, Palermo is famed for its several Norman-style buildings as well as other historical sites in and near the ancient city. Hotels in Palermo are conveniently spread out through the city nearby to local sites of architectural and historical interest. Palermo hotels are available in a wide variety of options from low-budget accommodations to five-star hotels. The city is particularly popular during the summer months and hotels in Palermo can become unavailable if not booked in advance. Particular local sites of interest include the Palazzo dei Normanni, which is home to the Cappella Palatina as well as a pristine example of Norman style architecture. Visitors will also enjoy the city’s central square, Piazza Pretoria, which boasts a large fountain as well as numerous eateries, bars and shopping. There are also several interesting mosques as the city was once held under Muslin rule.
