Introduction to Palermo - Outskirts
Located in Sicily’s northwest is the city of Palermo, noted for its rich culture, architecture, history and gastronomy. Each year, a large number of tourists vacate to the city, attracted by ideal Mediterranean weather, the renowned restaurants, the quality Palermo hotels and the Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque palaces, churches and buildings as well as the vibrant nightlife. In Palermo’s outskirts, travellers can enjoy a visit to Monte Pellegrino. At 600 metres in height, it offers a panoramic view of the city plus the sea and the surrounding mountains. It is also possible to spend a day on one of the island’s scenic beaches, easily accessible from the city centre. Within Palermo, old-world sites are numerous. Palermo Cathedral, San Giovanni de Lebbrosi, the Palazzo dei Normanni, Teatro Massimo and the Museo Archeologico Regionale are among the most inspiring attractions. Not recommended for children, the Catacombs of the Capuchin, housing 8,000 mummified bodies, is a unique site.
