Introduction to Padula, Italy
The town of Padula, located in southwest Italy's Campania region, offers visitors a range of world-class attractions. The town sits in Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, which is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. The region's heritage status is also based on Padula's Carthusian monastery, or Charterhouse. The second-biggest such monastery in Italy, the Certosa di Padula, as it is known in Italian, is nearly 500 years old, contains some 320 rooms, and is largely of Baroque style. Behind the monastery, the town flows up the foothills of the Campanian Appennine Mountains that run parallel with the coast and originally provided the town's defences. Climbing up into these narrow, wandering streets affords the opportunity to enjoy some fantastic views down onto the monastery and across the valley, with the park spreading out to the west. The old stone fortifications originally established by the cult of St Michael in the 6th century sit on the hill just to the east. Hotels in Padula can be found in this historic town centre and they give easy reach of most local attractions.
