Introduction to Otranto, Italy
Set in the far southeast, right at the tip of the 'heel' of Italy in Lecce Province, the ancient town of Otranto was built on the site of the Hellenistic town of Hydrus and was an important settlement during the Roman era. Its turbulent history includes its capture by Ottaman hordes led by Barbarossa and a brief period of belonging to the Napoleonic Kingdom of Naples. Its picturesque streets are steeped in history, with many glorious medieval buildings such as the cathedral, the Castello Aragonese, the Byzantine San Pietro Church and the catacombs of Torre Pinta. Magnificent sea views and lush, fertile agricultural surroundings make Otranto the perfect getaway destination, with many Otranto hotels set in charming old mansions. The region was once famous for its unique breed of horses, some of which can still be seen. The town's beaches are pretty but small, and crowded in summer, but a drive along the spectacular Adriatic coastline reveals tiny, deserted coves with white sand and sparkling blue waters. This region is truly Italian heaven. other spellings: otrantohotels, otelin otramto, otranot hotell, otratno hote, otrnato hote, otarnto hotle
