Introduction to Orbetello, Italy
The Tuscany town of Orbetello boasts a unique location on a strip of land between two lagoons. The town is completely surrounded by a natural reserve which shares its name, and the nearest airport lies 35kms to the north in the city of Grosseto. Orbetello hotels line both sides of the town, and most of them are located on one or the other of its neighbouring lagoons. The town was once an Etruscan community prior to falling under the control of the ancient Romans, and its Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral was constructed on the former site of a temple active in both the Etruscan and Roman eras. The lagoons boast boat tours, fishing, warm water during the summer months, and breathtaking sunsets surrounded by flamingos throughout the year. One of the most popular beaches here is known as Feniglia. An archaeological museum can be found close to the ruins of Cosa, an ancient Roman city.
