The Sicilian city of Noto, which sits at the southern end of the island in the province of Syracuse is surely one of the world's most beautiful cities. The number of spectacular buildings here must be seen to be believed. UNESCO registered the city and its church as a World Heritage site in 2002. Baroque style is the order of the day here and it would be impossible to miss. The streets are lined with flamboyant buildings and include many ornate fountains. The most impressive building is perhaps the pink-orange cathedral which towers above a broad expanse of stairs. On the other side of the street, the Town Hall is another splendid bit of Baroque engineering. Dozens of other elegant churches can be enjoyed, such as St Charles Borromeo and San Corrado. One actually could risk a Baroque overdose here. For something slightly different, head to the theatre building and Via Nicolaci. In the summer, the streets can get very hot but the lighting in the cool evenings only serves to accentuate the beauty of this city. Hotels in Noto are close to many attractions, but seeing it all takes time.
