Introduction to North Sardinia - Arbatax
For many visitors to Sardinia, their first glimpse of the Italian island is the port of Arbatax, where several ferries and cruise ships from Genoa and Rome dock. Although many of these visitors do not stay long in Arbatax, this seaside community five kilometres west of Tortoli is worth a closer look, especially for its dramatic views of the red cliffs from the nearby Capo Bellavista lighthouse. Several visitors even choose to stay at one of the dozen Arbatax hotels while exploring other parts of the breathtaking North Sardinia east coast. The port is said to have been named after an Arabic term for 14th tower, a possible reference to the watchtower the Spaniards constructed to protect the area from Arab pirates. This watchtower, called the Tower of San Michel, still stands in the middle of the port today. The nearest beaches to Arbatax are named: Orri, Sos Florea, Capo Monte and San Gemilano, while the town's three major churches are called: St Gemiliano, St Lussorio and St Salvatore. other spellings: arbatac otel, arbatak hotell, abatax hote, abartax hotles, arbetax hotle, erbatax hotes
