Introduction to Nocera Superiore, Italy
The southwest Italian town of Nocera Superiore is an old Etruscan city in the Campania region's province of Salerno. Established some 700 years before the birth of Christ, the town has played host to a series of conquerors including Romans, Ostrogoths, and a string of Italian nobles. Today, the expanded town is spread out over a considerable area of countryside along the E45 Euroroute and is home to many industrial operations. The town is bounded to the north by the railway line and to the south by a small river. One of the most notable buildings is the paleo-Christian church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which dates from the 6th century. It is built in a curious round Byzantine style and is home to Italy's second-largest baptismal font. The Basilica Materdomini was established some 1,000 years ago and is home to both a church and a convent. Hotels in Nocera Superiore are convenient for most of archaeological sites. At the hill, a few minutes to the north, visitors will find the ruins of Monte Castello as well as fabulous views across the valley to the sea. A particularly impressive hilltop castle is located next door, in Nocera Inferiore.
