Introduction to Naples - Chiaia
During the 16th century, Chiaia was a small seaside village outside Naples' city walls. Today, busy streets may have replaced the scenic fountains and greenery along the coastline separating this community from central Naples, but much of the seaside scenery and historic buildings remain unchanged. Many Chiaia hotels lie near the sea. The community's most prominent landmark is the large Villa Comunale public park. Originally, only royal family members were permitted to access this park, which was built from reclaimed sea land in the 1780s under the order of King Ferdinand IV. Today, visitors can enjoy both the park and its Anton Dohrn aquarium. This aquarium, Europe's second oldest, first opened in the 1870s. Among the dozen or so churches in this neighbourhood, few are as old or as impressive as the Santa Caterina a Chiaia, situated close to Martyrs' Square. This square, a massive obelisk, and its surrounding four lions form the entrance to some of Italy's finest shopping.Visit our Naples Travel Guide
