Introduction to Naples - Caserta
Sitting on the northern fringes of Naples, about 40kms along the A1 Autostrada, 'modern' Caserta was built more than 1,000 years ago, following the destruction of the original city in the late 9th century. Though the city is home to relatively few historic attractions, the ones it has are truly special. Of primary interest is the huge, elegant Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale), which is frequently referred to as Italy's Versailles and is registered as an UNESCO World Heritage site. This sprawling multi-storey palace sits within incredibly landscaped grounds, with sculptures and waterfalls carving a gentle slope through surrounding forests, and absolutely must not be missed. The kids will be impressed to hear that scenes from both the Star Wars and Mission Impossible movie franchises were shot in the palace. Hotels in Caserta are easily reached from the E45 Euroroute and the local railway station. The closest international airport, at Naples, takes about 30 minutes to reach by taxi.Visit our Naples Travel Guide
