Introduction to Naples - Capodimonte
In 1738, future Spanish monarch King Charles III built a majestic hunting lodge and palace in this peaceful area to the north of Naples. Today, most Capodimonte hotels are within walking distance of this palace and its adjacent park, still the biggest in Naples. This area's name translates to 'Top of the Hill' in English. The district typically sees cooler temperatures than the rest of the city during the hot summers. The palace now houses the city's art gallery and national museum, which occupy its entire first and second floors. The palace's ground floor is filled with ancient Roman sculptures. Many of the exhibits within this fascinating gallery once belonged to the palace's original residents. This area's namesake hill is home to an astronomical observatory owned by the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics. The community shares its name with a renowned porcelain company which has produced beautifully detailed and hand-painted porcelain pieces since 1743. The city's botanical garden is less than a kilometre away.Visit our Naples Travel Guide
