Introduction to Naples - Campi Flegrei
Europe's youngest mountain, Monte Nuovo, was created during Campi Flegrei's last major volcanic eruption in 1538. Today, this low lying caldera situated nine kilometres west of Naples has remained relatively dormant in recent years, with many homes standing directly on its crater rims. There are a total of 24 craters in this 13km wide caldera, known in English as the Phlegraean Fields. Many of these craters can be explored underwater along with the ancient underwater city of Baia. However, the best and safest place for visitors to see these volcanic craters up close is at Solfatara, a crater whose diameter measures about 700m and whose ground feels hot to touch. Solfatara's steaming fumes are hot enough to boil its surrounding mud. The 16th century Sanctuary of San Gennaro stands close to Solfatara's entrance. The star-shaped Aragonesi castle and fortress stands near two inactive volcanoes. Many Campi Flegrei hotels are located in the ancient Greek settlement of Pozzuoli, once bigger and more significant than nearby Naples. Visit our Naples Travel Guide
