Introduction to Mottola, Italy
The ancient hill town of Mottola occupies a strategically-critical position overlooking the Gulf of Taranto in the Italian region of Puglia. History here goes back to prehistoric times, though as with many regional communities, it has been sacked and rebuilt under a series of invaders in the last few thousand years. The main attractions for most people staying at hotels in Mottola are the historical old centre and the archaeological sites. The archaeological sites, located in ravines a few kilometres from the town, consist of cave dwellings in the sides of cliffs. The main ones are at San Biagio, Forcella, Petruscio and di Capo Gavito. Many were once occupied by a variety of cults and monks. In the old town, tourists can enjoy some of the remaining Hellenistic walls which date from around the 5th century BC. The town's 13th-century cathedral is the most prominent of the many interesting churches. The Town Hall, which stands on Piazza XX Settembre, is a pretty, old colonnaded building. To enjoy the view that made the town so important, head for the southern end of Mottola.
