The ancient hill town of Montenero is a classic example of such a community, commanding fine views across the valley below and out to the Adriatic Sea. From a distance, the town looks like a jumbled mess of stone buildings. From hotels in Montenero, visitors will find more beauty and little mess. Characteristically for such towns, the community's bell tower stands tall above the ancient streets and buildings. The tower is found next to the parish church of St Mathew the Apostle, which sits on Piazza Giovanni XXIII. This quaint little square is ringed by beautiful old houses and opens onto Piazza dell Liberta, home to beautifully-maintained gardens and a monument to war dead. Before leaving Piazza Giovanni XXIII, however, check out the incredibly narrow lane that squeezes between two houses at the far end of the piazza. Sitting at the top of an impressive set of stairs on a small hill at the base of the town's main hill, you'll find the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Bisaccia, a large and ornate church.
