Having first appeared in the 11th century, the town of Monte Sant'Angelo in Apulia is a relatively young Italian community.
At its birth, however, it was an important Norman holding, situated as it is at the reputed site of an appearance of St Michael in the 5th century AD.
The religious event is commemorated with the 13th-century Sanctuary of St Michael the Archangel, which is located in a cave and sees many religious pilgrims.
The town occupies a commanding position near the end of a sharp mountain ridge.
This position was for a long time defended by the castle, which today is a mix of elements from several centuries.
The oldest bastion, the Giants' Tower, dates from the 10th century.
Fabulous views can be enjoyed from many parts of the castle, which is reputedly haunted by a ghost.
The streets of the old town are filled with stunning old buildings.
The doors of the 12th century Tomb of Rothari contain important Biblical decoration.
The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which dates from the 11th and 12th centuries, also boasts some incredibly ornate relief work.
The remains of the 6th-century Abbey of Pulsano are about 15 minutes away from the town.
Most hotels in Monte Sant'Angelo are located high up in the mountains, overlooking the panoramic landscape and the coast.
