The Sicilian hilltop town of Montalbano Elicona, located in the island's northeast corner, sits in an area of incredible natural beauty. To the north lie the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. To the south, several nature reserves cover the Nebrodi range. Many visitors to hotels in Montalbano Elicona are attracted by the castle and the rugged medieval streets. The 13th-century castle cannot be missed. It sits at the top of the hill, completely dominating the surrounding community. Here, an incredible mix of angles, slopes and shapes greets the tourist, with many streets only accessible on foot and all lined by buildings that look like something off a film set. Stone is the order of the day here, and some of these stones appear to have been set millennia ago. The local mountains contain dense woods and lots of wildlife, and are a bit of a hidden treasure. It is well worth wandering the mountain roads to find the many old stone forts, megalithic structures and breathtaking vistas. The area immediately to the south of town is a particularly rich source of such sights.
