Introduction to Montaione, Italy
The little town of Montaione enjoys an enviable place in the Tuscan province of Florence, as well as some important history. Hotels in Montaione are ideally located for visiting tourist centres like Siena, Pisa and Florence. Volterra and San Gimignano are even closer, and can be reached in just 30 minutes. The archaeology and architecture of this pretty town testifies to a history that has seen several waves of invaders, and the old town is well worth a wander. The 13th-century Praetorian Palace is home to some incredible frescoes as well as an impressive façade. The town museum, which contains local artefacts as well as pieces from much farther away, is located here. The town is also famous for the ruins of many castles located in the area. Vignale and Pietrina are two of the best-known. The town's most prominent church, San Regolo, features a mix of different architectural styles as well as elements of much older buildings. The remains of an ancient Roman water cistern were unearthed about two kilometres from the town. A religious monument known as the Jerusalem of Tuscany, a complex of temples and chapels, is located in the nearby town of San Vivaldo.
